Stanley K. Tanger was an American businessman and philanthropist who was born on April 5, 1923, in New York City and passed away on February 23, 2010, in Boca Raton, Florida. He was the founder and chairman of Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, a publicly-traded real estate investment trust (REIT) that owns and operates outlet shopping centers in the United States and Canada.
Tanger was the son of Jewish immigrants from Russia and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. He attended New York University but left school in 1943 to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, Tanger returned to New York and began working for his father's textile business.
In the early 1980s, Tanger saw an opportunity to capitalize on the growing popularity of outlet shopping. He founded Tanger Factory Outlet Centers in 1981 and opened the company's first outlet shopping center in Burlington, North Carolina, in 1984. Since then, the company has grown to operate more than 40 outlet shopping centers across the United States and Canada.
Throughout his career, Tanger was known for his philanthropy and community involvement. He established the Tanger Outlets Charitable Foundation in 1993 to support local charities and organizations in the communities where Tanger Outlet Centers are located. He also served on the board of directors for numerous non-profit organizations.
Tanger was married to his wife, Joyce, for over 60 years and had three children. He remained active in his business and philanthropic endeavors until his passing at the age of 86.
